The Pit ist kein gewöhnlicher Tauchgang — es ist ein landschaftlicher Moment. Der dramatische vertikale Schacht offenbart sich beim Einstieg und die Wände fallen scheinbar endlos ab. Das Wasser ist oben klar und hell, doch unter etwa 30 Metern liegt eine Schicht Schwefelwasserstoff, die wie ein falscher Boden wirkt und eine surreale visuelle Erfahrung erzeugt. Fossilien und Baumwurzeln prägen die Wände. Der Ort erfordert erweiterte Tauchtechniken, Atemkontrolle und ein ausgeprägtes Dekompressionsbewusstsein, aber für erfahrene Taucher ist dies ein einzigartiges Erlebnis.
The Pit is not an ordinary dive — it is a landscape moment. The dramatic vertical shaft reveals itself on entry and the walls seem to fall away endlessly. The water above is clear and bright, but below approximately 30 metres lies a layer of hydrogen sulphide, creating a false bottom effect and a surreal visual experience. Fossils and tree roots mark the walls. The location demands advanced diving technique, breathing control, and deep decompression awareness, but for experienced divers it is a singular experience.

The Pit ist eine massive Dolinen-Bildung mit über 119 Metern vertikaler Tiefe — eine der tiefsten bekannten Cenoten in der Region. Die Entstehung erfolgte über Millionen von Jahren durch massive Lösungsvorgänge in Kalkstein. Die heutige Struktur zeigt deutlich die Schichten der Erdgeschichte: Fossilien von prähistorischen Tieren sind in den Wänden sichtbar, und Baumwurzeln durchziehen die Nischen. Die Wasserschichtung (Halokline) bei etwa 15–17 Metern trennt Süßwasser von Salzwasser. Die Schwefelwasserstoff-Schicht bei etwa 30 Metern ist eine weitere geologische Besonderheit — eine anaerobe Zone, die verschiedene chemische Verhältnisse aufzeigt.
The Pit is a massive sinkhole formation with over 119 metres of vertical depth — one of the deepest known cenotes in the region. Formation occurred over millions of years through massive limestone dissolution. The current structure clearly shows the layers of Earth's history: fossils from prehistoric animals are visible in the walls, and tree roots penetrate the crevices. The water stratification (halocline) at approximately 15–17 metres separates fresh water from salt water. The hydrogen sulphide layer at about 30 metres is a further geological feature — an anaerobic zone showing different chemical conditions.

The Pit ist kein klassisches Höhlensystem mit Passagen, sondern ein offenes Wasserloch mit dramatischer Tiefengeometrie. Der Einstieg erfolgt in einer flachen Zone an der Oberfläche; beim Abstieg wird die Tiefe unmittelbar spürbar. Die Wände sind weitgehend vertikal oder überhängend, mit kleineren Felsvorsprüngen und Fossilienbändern. Bei etwa 30 Metern befindet sich die charakteristische H₂S-Schicht — ein biologisch totes Gebiet, das von oben wie ein Boden wirkt. Das Licht von der Oberfläche dringt bis etwa 20 Meter tief ein; darunter wird es schnell dunkel. Die maximale empfohlene Tiefe für Freizeittaucher liegt bei etwa 40–50 Metern, aber das System reicht deutlich tiefer für technische Taucher.
The Pit is not a classical cave system with passages but an open water hole with dramatic depth geometry. Entry is in a shallow zone at the surface; depth becomes immediately apparent on descent. The walls are largely vertical or overhanging, with minor rock ledges and fossil seams. At approximately 30 metres sits the characteristic H₂S layer — a biologically dead zone that appears as a floor when viewed from above. Light from the surface penetrates to roughly 20 metres; below that it darkens rapidly. The maximum recommended depth for recreational divers is about 40–50 metres, but the system extends considerably deeper for technical divers.

Die Wassertemperatur beträgt durchschnittlich 24°C — ein 3-mm-Anzug ist ausreichend. Die Halokline (Süß-Salzwasser-Grenze) liegt bei etwa 15–17 Metern und ist deutlich sichtbar. Die Sichtweite im oberen Bereich ist normalerweise 20–30 Meter, unter der H₂S-Schicht jedoch kann es neblig werden. Die H₂S-Schicht selbst ist ein Phänomen: Sie erscheint wie ein dichter Nebel und ist optisch desorientierend. Licht-Durchdringung stoppt bei etwa 20 Metern ohne künstliches Licht. Der Tauchgang erfordert volle Dekompressionskontrolle — 30+ Minuten Dekompressionsstopps sind typisch für Tauchgänge auf 40+ Metern. Nitrox wird empfohlen. Strömung ist gering.
Water temperature averages 24°C — a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient. The halocline (fresh-salt water boundary) sits at approximately 15–17 metres and is clearly visible. Visibility in the upper zone is typically 20–30 metres, but below the H₂S layer it can become hazy. The H₂S layer itself is a phenomenon: it appears like dense mist and is visually disorienting. Light penetration stops at roughly 20 metres without artificial light. The dive demands full decompression control — 30+ minutes of decompression stops are typical for dives to 40+ metres. Nitrox is recommended. Current is minimal.

The Pit ist berühmt für dramatische Lichtstrahlen, die von oben durch das Wasser eindringen — am besten sichtbar in den Morgenstunden zwischen 10 und 12 Uhr bei gutem Wetter. Diese Lichtkegel entstehen durch die steil fallenden Wände und die Höhe des Schachtes. Die beste Zeit zum Fotografieren sind die frühen Morgenstunden, wenn die Sonne niedrig steht und intensive Strahlen wirft.
The Pit is famous for dramatic light beams penetrating the water from above — best visible in the morning hours between 10–12am in good weather. These light cones form due to the steeply dropping walls and the height of the shaft. The best photography times are in the early morning hours when the sun is low and casts intense rays.

Access & Logistics
The Pit liegt etwa 45 km südlich von Puerto Aventuras, in der Nähe von Tulum. Die Fahrtzeit beträgt etwa 1–1,5 Stunden. Das Gelände ist signalisiert und offiziell zugänglich. Der Einstieg erfolgt vom Ufer aus nach kurzer Vorbereitung an Land. Wir planen alle Tauchgänge mit umfassender Vorplanung, Briefings und Sicherheitsprotokollen. Dies ist kein spontaner Tauchgang — Termine müssen im Voraus arrangiert werden.
The Pit sits approximately 45 km south of Puerto Aventuras, near Tulum. Drive time is about 1–1.5 hours. The location is marked and officially accessible. Entry is from the shore with short dry-equipment setup. We plan all dives with comprehensive pre-planning, briefings, and safety protocols. This is not a spontaneous dive — bookings must be arranged in advance.
